Peter Gabriel - Flume (Bon Iver cover)
A well-done cover song is able to interpret the original in such a fashion to make it distinctive, new, unique and familiar all at once. It sounds funny, but I think that’s what truths are like.
They are these grand universal themes we all instinctively know and understand—love, belonging, fears, jealousies, and hope—but a well-told story or piece of art or song can make us feel them anew all over again. And we feel, understand, and recognize it. And it’s exciting, comfortable, and deeply personal all at the same time.
I often wonder if that’s what falling in love is like. Less the constant songs or birds chirping and more the recognition of a universal truth. An “oh, there you are” feeling to it. Less fireworks and poems, more a good song you’ve heard before but suddenly see differently because suddenly it’s not just you, but something bigger than yourself.
Maybe love is a really good cover song.
